Humpback whales

There are always those times when being on 24 hr duty is a bit of a nightmare. Such as last night, where having cooked a BBQ for base (with lots of preparatory assistance from Nicola and Al), I went off to put a bit of pirate fancy dress on, and no sooner had I reached the lounge, then I was called to put a SAR boat on the water. Alas, I did so with Birgit. The planes departed and again no sooner was I comfortably sat down then up again as the planes were returning. except, this time, as we hitched the boat up, two humpback whales surfaced right next to the wharf. The pictures speak the rest, and the video (which might go up, even more..)

noticeably identifiable!

These wonderful animals were definitely interested in use, as they stuck around for 15 minutes

I'd say at least twice the length of the boat

Hopefully, one of the planes which I'd patched a message to, has an aerial picture...

Rothera is a popular place for tourists as we give them such a good reception.
Hangar antics

Rothera operates as an airbridge for aircraft into the Antarctic , not only for our own Twin Otters and Dash-7, but also private and government planes. November is busy every year with fleeting visits from a variety of nationalities heading to the Pole, McMurdo and across to the eastern sheet. Some of our personnel get to Halley early season by this method.
One such aircraft, a DC3 Basler, has been stuck at Rothera after mechanical issues and today its new engine was being fitted in the Hangar.

A new Turboprop engine ready to be fitted

The Basler is worked on in the warmth and shelter of the Hangar
